This chart shows the total value of various music formats by year. Look at just how enormous the CD became relative to LPs and cassettes. I guess the lesson is that they are being replaced by a few cheaper/less profitable formats (including the mysterious “Other” and “mobile”), but representing the formats up until downloads as monolithic, the only way to get music, seems wrong. What about concerts, merchandise, sheet music, and the other ways people interact with musical products?
